Barboursville – Little Skyline (34, C, MH)

Sat Dec 2 @ 11:00 am

This route loops north and east through western Orange County, then crosses the Rapidan river into southern Madison County. Heading north and east again, it crosses the Rapidan river a second time, climbs up and over Little Skyline Drive, and returns past Montpelier (the home of James and Dolly Madison). The terrain is modestly hilly, alternating between shaded and open.

Alerts:  Use caution on US 33 when exiting from and returning to the parking lot.

PARTICULAR CAUTION: The railroad crossing on Weyburn Road (mile 30/36) has proved to be quite dangerous, having caused several serious accidents in the past. It is strongly recommended that you slow down to less than 10 miles per hour when approaching the tracks, and cross as close as possible to 90 degrees. In wet conditions dismount and walk your bike across.

Ride Classification

For details on how group rides are categorized, check out the Ride Classification guidelines.

Requirements For Riders

All riders are required to have a helmet; a taillight, Road ID and a rear-view mirror is strongly recommended.  You are also expected to have adequate fluids and a road-worthy bicycle in good repair.  Many rides, but not all, will include the opportunity to stop at a store to replenish supplies.

You should be prepared to fix a flat tire and perform other minor repairs on the roadside.  If you are new to cycling and are not comfortable with these procedures, don’t let that stop you.  However, you might want to talk to a more experienced member before the ride so the group is prepared to help if necessary.

Safety On The Road

The club considers safety to be our very highest priority.  Please review the information on the Safety Page before you join us for a ride.

We hope that you will find this site helpful; your questions and comments are welcomed.
