October 2024
News Highlights:
Calendar Updates –  Beginning October 1, 2024, the start time for all club rides will move back one hour to 10:00AM. As a reminder, please arrive at the start location with plenty of time to suit up and get your bike ready to roll out of the parking lot at the departure time.
Upcoming Organized Fall Events – The Culpeper Cycling Century, which is now hosted by Blue Ridge Cyclery Events Promotions, LLC, rolls on October 5. Up next, our good friends and neighbors to our north will run the 18th annual Tour de Greene on October 12. This fully-supported event will feature three routes (21 miles, 45 miles, and a metric century), and includes lunch. Proceeds will benefit Feeding Greene, the food pantry of Greene County. Click here for Tour de Greene details. Then, the Shenandoah Valley Fall Foliage Bike Festival will be held October 18-20, 2024. Based in Staunton, this is a fully-supported 3 day festival featuring great riding, great food, volunteer opportunities, and support for local charities. Click here for more information. Â
Frays Mill Bridge Is Open! – VDOT has reopened the bridge across Marsh Run on Frays Mill Road (at the bottom of “the Pyrenees”), which had been closed since January 2, 2024. Â The work replacing the bridge was completed more than two and a half months ahead of schedule. Â Because of the closure, CBC had to modify many of the routes that originate from the popular Spring Hill Baptist Church start point (as well as a few other courses) to detour around the bridge. Â The ride schedule will be updated to reflect the reopening as soon as possible. Â For upcoming rides, please ensure you upload the correct version of the routes to your navigation devices.
Stillhouse Creek Road is Closed – The bridge over Stillhouse Creek in Albemarle County south of Batesville is closed after VDOT crews discovered damage to one of the abutments that support the bridge deck and superstructure. At this point, VDOT has no timeline for the bridge’s reopening. Stillhouse Creek Road, which climbs up to Crown Orchard, is included on a number of CBC routes. The next such ride on the schedule is the 33-mile Crozet – Batesville route on November 7; this may need to be changed.
More Website Upgrades – In our continuing effort to make the website more informative and easier to use, last month we launched two new experimental features… a “one-click” registration button on the ride pages for members to express their interest in participating, and a classifieds section.  New this month, we’re adding a filter to the calendar so you can highlight the types of rides and events that interest you (eg, B Rides, C Rides, Gravel Rides, Social Events, etc.).  On the calendar page, just click the link for the filter of your choice.
New RideWithGPS Club Account Features – One of the great benefits of club membership is access to CBC’s Ride with GPS Club Account. If you have not already joined CBC’s RWGPS Club Account – which is different than a personal account you may have with RWGPS – you can find the instructions under Members > Ride with GPS Club Account.
RWGPS recently came out with a couple of cool features:
1) They have a new lineup of advanced Map Layers on the club routes for unpaved cycling, wind, US Air Quality Index, NOAA snow depth and US cell coverage. These Map Layers are only visible on your laptop/computer; they are not visible on your phone. The layers are also visible on your own personal accounts if you are a Premium subscriber. Read more about this lineup here.
2) RWGPS now allows you to instantly switch from your personal account to the CBC Club account. You can do this on your laptop/computer by clicking on the arrow by your profile in the upper right corner when you open the RWGPS website.
Do you have an idea for another club social event? Is there some activity or local event you would like to do with some of your fellow club members? We would love to add something like this to the club calendar (with enough notice that we can add it to our monthly newsletter). Contact us with the details.
Last jerseys available – We have two remaining classic women’s medium jerseys, which are available for $65 and can be paid for electronically, or with check or cash. Please contact us if you would like to buy or try one on.
Please welcome this month’s newest club members – Grace Berry, Chuck Lawson, Patrick Kearns, George Reed, Jeremy Highsmith, Artem Astakhov, and Jon Lendon.
