April 2025
Ride Calendar Updates – We hope you have enjoyed the weekly Sunday gravel rides. April is the last month for these scheduled rides until the fall. Come on out and join us! Check out the calendar for the particulars.
Safe Cycling Class on April 5 – Join our very own Peter Aaron, a League of American Bicyclist certified instructor, for a class that will teach you some skills to handle your bike in unexpected situations. Peter says “I know many of you probably think that you have been riding for many years, so what can you learn?” Well, we can all learn new tricks. Even if you are an experienced rider you will be challenged to see how your skills stand up. Stop and start with confidence, look over your shoulder and hold your line, traverse a slalom course, do a rock dodge, hop a hazard in the road, learn a fast stop, learn to ride slowly/develop balance, learn some facts about the geometry of your bike. Come for the ride from Walton Middle School April 5, bring a lunch and a chair, tailgate for lunch and stay for the class at 2 pm! Please signup on the ride calendar.
Roanoke Getaway Weekend – After months of planning, CBC recently announced details for its first weekend getaway for members and their partners (including non-riders) in Roanoke, on June 7-8, 2025. Great riding, social opportunities, and activities for non-riders will be available. The Hampton Inn & Suites Roanoke-Downtown will serve as the event hub. We have arranged a block of 15 rooms with discounted rates of $159 for Saturday, June 7. A limited number of discounted rooms have also been reserved for folks who want to go early and stay the night on Friday, June 6. After the blocks are filled, other rooms may be added at the preferred rate if available at the time of booking. The block closes on May 6, 2025, but secure your room early to make sure you get a spot. To book at the preferred rate, click HERE, or call hotel reception at 540.400.6000 and ask for the Charlottesville Bicycle Club Weekend Getaway group rate. On site parking is $8/day. The hotel will provide a conference room for secure bike storage. There is no registration fee for this event. Participants will be responsible for their own costs. If you book a room, please let us know here. See the calendar for more details.
Happy Hour – CBC’s next happy hour is scheduled for April 17, 2025, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, at club sponsor Random Row Brewing Company. Discounts available for club members. Check the calendar for details.
Summer Picnic – Save the date! CBC will host is annual summer picnic July 12, 2025. Rides will be available for all classes of riders, with the picnic to follow. All members and their families are invited. Details, including place, time and routes will be announced soon.
Stillhouse Creek Road is Still Closed – The bridge over Stillhouse Creek in Albemarle County south of Batesville is still closed. The newest open date published by VDOT is still March 31, 2025, though our recon yesterday proves otherwise. There has been quite a bit of progress this month though. We will keep you updated on the status of the bridge. We have added comments to the club routes affected by this closure.
Special Discount for Storming of Thunder Ridge – The organizers of Storming of Thunder Ridge, held this year on Sunday, May 18 in Lynchburg VA, are offering CBC club members a 15% discount on registration for any of their four distances. All proceeds go toward benefiting the YMCA of Central Virginia and its community programs. Use the code CharlottesvilleBC2025 when you register here.
Do you have an idea for another club social event? Is there some activity or local event you would like to do with some of your fellow club members? We would love to add something like this to the club calendar (with enough notice that we can add it to our monthly newsletter). Contact us with the details.
Please welcome this month’s newest club members: Nathan Young, Matt Klanica, and Ava Canfield.
Our thanks to CBC members who renewed this past month: Kevin Dooley, Tim Bernstein, Kevin Dean, Bob Mical, Craig Seto, William Hill, Steve Keith, and Colin Derdeyn.
