April 2024

News Highlights:

Summer Picnic – Save the date!  CBC will host its annual summer picnic July 13, 2024.  Rides will be available for all classes of riders, with the picnic to follow.  All members and their families are invited.  Details, including place, time, and routes will be announced soon.

Gravel Rides – We have two Sunday gravel rides on the schedule in April!  Check out the calendar for details and come out and join us. These will be the last Sunday gravel rides until the fall.

Weyburn Rail Crossing – Good news for all area road cyclists… The abandoned railroad crossing on Weyburn Road in Orange County is no more.

As we reported last summer, an area cyclist was seriously injured in a crash while crossing the defunct rail tracks.  In response, CBC reached out to local authorities, including Orange county officials, Norfolk Southern Railroad, VDOT, and a U.S. representative, in an effort to have the rail crossing repaired or removed.  We’re happy to report that VDOT recently removed the rails and patched the road, making this area now much safer for cyclists.

While this was a collective effort, one person in particular pushed for this great result.  For the past nine months, Bill Lowe wrote emails, made phone calls, and encouraged action.  On behalf of all our road cyclists, thank you Bill!

The success in removing the Weyburn crossing shows that our voice as a cycling community can have a positive impact.

First Thursday continues – Our first two “First Thursday” coffee rides have been big successes.  Come join the fun as the new tradition continues April 4 from Grit Coffee in Crozet.  Check the calendar for details.

Lunch after Saturday rides – We are working on adding possible lunch get-togethers after some of the Saturday rides.  Find more details in the comments for those rides.  Feel free to suggest something if you have a favorite place to go after a ride.

Ride to Defeat ALS – The Ride to Defeat ALS: Blue Ridge is looking for riders and volunteers.  It is being held on Saturday, May 4, 2024.  It starts at Pro Re Nata in Crozet, and offers paved route options of 25KM, 50KM and 100KM as well as gravel route options of 40KM and 60KM.  You can find out more information here.  And you can save $10 on the registration cost by using the code CBC10.

Please welcome this month’s newest club members: Dennis Scannell, Kevin Dean, David Harrington, and James Bohland.
