CBC Roanoke Weekend Getaway

Sat Jun 7 - Sun Jun 8

The Charlottesville Bicycle Club is pleased to announce plans for its first weekend getaway for members and their partners.  Join us for fun-packed days of riding and socializing in Roanoke, Virginia on June 7-8, 2025.  We hope this weekend will provide an opportunity for both members as well as non-riding partners to enjoy the beauty, history, and arts that this highly-scenic corner of Virginia has to offer.

Multiple course options will be available for riders of all interests and abilities, including bucolic valleys, the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, and miles of paved bike-friendly Roanoke Valley Greenways.  Official rides will be planned for Saturday and Sunday, so participants can depart Charlottesville on Saturday morning, ride, enjoy evening social activities, then ride again on Sunday before returning home.  For those interested in going to Roanoke early and staying an extra night, we will also have suggestions for a couple of rides on Friday.

For the non-riders in attendance, Roanoke has plenty to entertain, including the O. Winston Link and History Museum, the Taubman Museum of Art, the Roanoke Pinball Museum, lots of vintage antiques, and a historic city market.   Walkers and hikers can also enjoy the Greenways.  The trailhead for McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots along the Appalachian Trail, is a short 15-mile drive from downtown Roanoke.

Social events will be planned for all attendees for Saturday night.

The Hampton Inn & Suites Roanoke-Downtown will serve as the event hub.  We have arranged for members a block of 15 rooms with discounted rates of $159 for Saturday, June 7.  A limited number of discounted rooms have also been reserved for folks who want to go early and stay the night on Friday, June 6.  After the blocks are filled, other rooms may be added at the preferred rate if available at the time of booking.  The block closes on May 6, 2025, but secure your room early to make sure you get a spot!  On site parking is $8/day.  The hotel will provide a conference room for secure bike storage.

There is no registration fee for this event.  Participants will be responsible for their own costs.  For questions about the event, or for information on how to reserve your member-discounted room, contact us here.

More details, including routes and social plans, will be provided later.

NOTE:  We officially cancel rides only if we consider conditions to be unsafe (high winds, ice/snow, etc.).  Otherwise rides take place whether or not people comment about attending.  Each member should make their own decision about riding based on the forecast.

Important Reminder

Be sure to have the latest route (routes can change from time to time) on your phone or bike computer, and/or have a map or cue sheet.

Ride Classification

For details on how group rides are categorized, check out the Ride Classification guidelines.

Requirements For Riders

All riders are required to have a helmet; a taillight, Road ID and a rear-view mirror is strongly recommended.  You are also expected to have adequate fluids and a road-worthy bicycle in good repair.  Many rides, but not all, will include the opportunity to stop at a store to replenish supplies.

You should be prepared to fix a flat tire and perform other minor repairs on the roadside.  If you are new to cycling and are not comfortable with these procedures, don’t let that stop you.  However, you might want to talk to a more experienced member before the ride so the group is prepared to help if necessary.

Safety On The Road

The club considers safety to be our very highest priority.  Please review the information on the Safety Page before you join us for a ride.

We hope that you will find this site helpful; your questions and comments are welcomed.

Scheduling

Start times are based on seasonal averages.  Because of the inability to ensure everyone is informed of a last-minute change, scheduled rides will not change based on predicted weather and temperature.  Also, club rides generally will not show as “canceled” on the calendar.  All riders have their personal thresholds for temperature, wind, and moisture, and are expected to use their best judgment about whether to ride on a given day.  CBC encourages all members to exercise caution.  If in doubt, please use the comment section on the ride calendar page to communicate with other potentially interested riders.
