Afton – Devils Knob – Reeds Gap

Distance: 47 miles
Climbing: 110 feet per mile

Description: This challenging ride includes a modest climb immediately after the start, then a long climb up to Afton village and on to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway climbs for much of the next 9 miles to the Dripping Rock Parking Area. Crossing the Appalachian Trail (on foot), it then climbs to the top of Devil’s Knob, descends through the Wintergreen resort, and climbs to the top of Reed’s Gap. The route returns on the Parkway, down through Afton village, and back to the start.

Stores: Mile 21 (Wintergreen Resort).

Alerts:

1.  1.3 mile stretch on US 250 from Afton village at mile 7 up to the Parkway has moderate, fast traffic.
2.  Descent from Devil’s Knob through Wintergreen is steep and winding.
3.  Descent from Blue Ridge Parkway on US 250, Route 6, and Route 750 is steep and winding.
