SUMMARY:Dyke - Markwood (35\, A / B\, MH)
DESCRIPTION:With prime riding season upon us\, there are lots of great events coming up\, so read on for the details … Ride Calendar Updates – Spring is here\, so make sure your bike is in good working order and come join a ride!  The start time for all club rides remains 10:00A in April.  Please arrive at the start locations in plenty of time to get you and your bikes ready to roll by the departure time. Group Ride Sign Up is now only via the one click Sign Up button!  We have removed the Comments section as an option to sign up for rides.  Planning to join a group ride? Great! Please sign up by clicking the “Sign Up for Ride” button on each Ride page linked from the Club’s calendar. You must be logged in to your member account to use this feature.  This will let your friends know you plan to attend. Plus\, other members can see who else from the Club plans to be there (the list of signees is only visible to members). It only takes a second. If your plans change\, you can always “cancel” by clicking the same button. April 11 Bike Skills Class – Come for the ride from Walton Middle School April 11\, bring a lunch\, tailgate and stay for the 1P class covering bike handling skills\, parking lot drills\, and road hazard avoidance techniques!  Please sign up on the ride calendar. If you read the Safety Chat last month (link to archive) you know why it is important to have these skills. Why not learn techniques to handle situations in a class setting before you encounter them unexpectedly on the road? Some may think “I have been riding for many years\, what can I learn?”  Led by Peter Aaron\, a League of American Bicyclist certified instructor\, this is a class worth taking.  Even if you are an experienced rider\, you will be challenged to see how your bike handling skills stand up. Traverse a slalom course\, do a rock dodge\, hop a hazard in the road\, learn a fast stop\, learn to ride slowly/develop balance\, and learn some facts about the geometry of your bike.  If you have taken the class before\, practice helps and there will be something new you didn’t do in the previous versions of the class.Coffee Club – The CBC coffee club will gather again April 10\, 10:00 AM\, at C’ville Coffee at 1301 Harris Street. Lunch Ride from Random Row – CBC is launching its first in-town ride and lunch from club sponsor Random Row on April 19.  Two new routes of 11 and 23 miles will be offered.  For cyclists interested in a more casual group experience\, Peter Aaron will lead the 11-mile route as a NO DROP ride.  Everything a cyclist could want will be available… plenty of parking\, pre-ride coffee\, restrooms\, and quiet residential routes\, followed by lunch from Random Row.  Details will be available on the calendar.Weekend Getaway – CBC will host its second annual weekend getaway for members and their partners (non-riders welcome!) in Frederick\, MD\, June 5–7\, 2026.  Official rides will be planned for Saturday and Sunday\, with optional rides suggested for those who want to travel up north on Friday.  Social events will be planned for all participants Saturday evening.  Frederick offers lots to do for riders and non-riders alike\, including the Carroll Creek Park\, a mile-long linear park with walking paths\, bridges\, fountains\, public art\, restaurants\, breweries\, and patios.  The Homewood Suites by Hilton Frederick will serve as our event hub.  Discounted rooms may be booked by clicking this unique booking link\, or dialing 301-663-9600\, then 0\, to reach the front desk\, and mention Charlottesville Bicycle Club or Group Code 91B.  If you book a room\, please let us know here.  Details\, including routes\, to follow soon.  There is no registration fee for this event.  Participants will be responsible for their own costs.  Parking at Grit Coffee\, Crozet – For our monthly coffee rides from Grit Coffee in Crozet\, cyclists have been asked leave the parking spaces nearest the retail businesses open for their regular customers.  Please park only in the rear of the Grit Coffee parking lot\, closest to Claremont Lane.    Stillhouse Creek Road Closed (again) – Starting April 6\, VDOT will close portions of Stillhouse Creek Road in Albemarle County to replace the bridge over Whiteside Branch.  Work is expected to continue through May 15\, weather permitting.Mission Home Road – As promised in the November 2025 newsletter\, we have created some routes that incorporate the “newly” paved stretch of Simmons Gap Road that allows those on road bikes to climb or descend Mission Home Road.  Check out the new Free Union – Dyke – Mission route from Free Union School that has distances of 35\, 42 and 52 miles\, and the 35 mile clockwise and counterclockwise additions to the White Hall – Nortonsville route from the White Hall Community Building.  We will be incorporating those routes into our schedule; we hope you like the additions!Newsletter Help Wanted – Looking for ways to support your club and its members?  This monthly newsletter is one of the primary ways the club reaches out to the entire membership.  We’d love a bit of help with content and distribution.  On the job training provided!  Email us at info@charlottesvillebicycleclub.org.  Jersey available – The following extra short sleeved jersey is available for purchase: classic women’s medium (1).  Jersey costs $66 and can be paid for electronically\, or with check or cash.  Please contact us if you would like to buy or try it on.                                                         Other Rides for your Consideration:    The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a 1\,500 mile multi-use route that links the World Trade Center\, the Pentagon\, and the Flight 93 Memorial.  Check out their website for details about the trail and rides that the September 11th National Memorial Alliance is organizing. The Smoky Mountain Wheelmen are hosting their 24th annual Cherohala Challenge on Saturday\, June 6\, 2026.  Check out their website for details here. Please welcome this month’s newest CBC members:  Clay Moldenhauer and John Harper. Our thanks to CBC members who renewed this past month: Candice Heisey\, Kevin Dean\, Johanna Claasen\, Kevin Dooley\, Bob Mical\, Steve Keith\, Aims Chamberlain\, Craig Seto\, and Mark Stanis. The CBC

The CBC
