November 2024
News Highlights:
Calendar Updates – The club rides in November will still begin at 10:00AM, but don’t forget to change your clocks on Sunday, November 3. As a reminder, please arrive at the start location with plenty of time to suit up and get your bike ready to roll out of the parking lot at the departure time.
Upcoming Rail Trail Ride – Check out the calendar for the November 8 ride on the High Bridge Trail!
Gravel is Back! – We have two Sunday gravel rides scheduled for November and three scheduled for December. These rides are designated with a ‘G’ in the ride description. In addition, Blue Wheel Bicycles (one of our sponsors) has a Winter Gravel Series that begins this year on November 10 with their Wilderness Tertiary FireRoad (WTF) ride. Check out their website for the particulars, and for the dates of the rest of the series when announced.
Next Happy Hour! – Join your friends and make some new ones at the next CBC happy hour at club sponsor Random Row Brewing Company, November 21, from 4:30-6:30PM. Discounts available for club members. Check the calendar for details.
Plank Road Thru Truck Restriction! – VDOT has posted NO THRU TRUCKS signs for vehicles turning onto Plank Road from US 29 or from US 250 as well as for vehicles that have turned onto Plank Road from US 29 or from US 250. The Thru Truck restriction prohibits semi-trucks, trucks with trailers, dump trucks, and logging trucks. Smaller panel trucks and pickup trucks are permitted as are delivery trucks, lawn maintenance trucks and construction trucks that are accessing a portion of Plank Road between US 29 and US 250. CBC, along with residents in the Batesville area, submitted comments to VDOT in support of this designation. Thank you for contributing to this very favorable outcome for the cycling community.
Stillhouse Creek Road is Still Closed – The bridge over Stillhouse Creek in Albemarle County south of Batesville is closed after VDOT crews discovered damage to one of the abutments that support the bridge deck and superstructure. Stillhouse Creek Road, which climbs up to Crown Orchard, is included on a number of CBC routes.  VDOT has published the anticipated completion date of that work to be November 1. However, recon today does not show that any work has been completed. We will keep you posted on the status of this bridge and add comments to the club routes accordingly.
Website Upgrades – In our continuing effort to make the website more informative and easier to use, two months ago we launched two new experimental features… a “one-click” registration button on the ride pages for members to express their interest in participating, and a classifieds section. As a reminder, you can find the classifieds under the Members only drop-down menu.
Bike Club Book Club – Are you interested in joining a book club of fellow bike club members that would meet every two months? If so, please join Dominique on Sunday, November 10 at 3 pm at MarieBette Bakery (700 Rose Hill Drive, Charlottesville) for a preliminary discussion about getting this book club together. Stay tuned for more details after this first meeting.
RideWithGPS Holiday Giveback Challenge – Each year in December, RWGPS runs a Holiday Gift Campaign, which enables anyone to purchase 15 months of a Premium subscription for the price of 12 months. It is the only deal they run on subscriptions, and they are adding a new option this year. Each time that anyone makes a purchase of such a gift subscription using a link they will send us around November 12, RWGPS will give your Charlottesville Bicycle Club 10% of that purchase! We will update the archived version of this newsletter and we will include the link in our December newsletter. Thank you in advance for considering a renewal that will send money to the club from RWGPS.
Post modified to add this link. Click on the link to purchase a new Premium subscription and get 15 months for the price of 12. If you already have a Premium subscription, clicking on the link adds 15 months to your current subscription for the price of 12 months. Doing either will result in the $8 payment to CBC from RWGPS!!
Do you have an idea for another club social event? Is there some activity or local event you would like to do with some of your fellow club members? We would love to add something like this to the club calendar (with enough notice that we can add it to our monthly newsletter). Contact us with the details.
Please welcome this month’s newest club members – Martin Quinn and Chris Weaver.
